Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the option to challenge particular decisions made by the official, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
