Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to hospital.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
