🔗 Share this article Anthony Barry Reveals The Vision: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear. Ten years back, Barry featured for Accrington Stanley. Currently, he is focused on helping Thomas Tuchel claim the World Cup trophy in 2026. The road from player to coach started through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his destiny. Metoric Climb The coach's journey stands out. Commencing as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, and he held coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. He has worked with big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the peak as he describes it. “Dreams are the starting point … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big then you break it down: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. We must create a structured plan so we can for optimal success.” Obsession with Details Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both push hard at comfort zones. The approach include psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. Barry emphasizes the England collective and avoids language like “international break”. “It's not time off or a rest,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.” Ambitious Trainers Barry describes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We want to dominate every aspect of the game,” he declares. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead with developments and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity. “We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it during that time. We need to progress from idea to information to knowledge to execution. “To build a methodology enabling productivity in the 50 days, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we need to foster connections with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.” World Cup Qualifiers Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, to gain more impetus. “The manager and I agree that the football philosophy ought to embody everything that is good of English football,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the versatility, the robustness, the honesty. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear. “To make it light, we need to provide a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action. “There are emotional wins available to trainers at both ends of the pitch – starting moves deep, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, notably in domestic leagues. All teams are well-prepared now. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.” Thirst for Improvement Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns about the presentation, as his cohort included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he sought out difficult settings he could find to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise. Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it said plenty that Chelsea removed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry. The next manager with the club took over, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. English football's governing body see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland. “Thomas is unique {in terms of personality and methodology|in character and approach|
